England captain Wayne Rooney defended by manager Gareth Southgate
 

England’s caretaker manager Gareth Southgate has hit out at fans for booing Wayne Rooney during tonight’s 2-0 win over Malta.
In his first game in charge since replacing the disgraced Sam Allardyce, Southgate leaped to the defence of Rooney afterwards after what was seen by many as another below-par display.
The Manchester United captain has also found himself out of favour at club level recently, but Southgate does not share the view that he isn’t performing.
