Empty halls, straight jackets and a crumbling autopsy room: Haunting photos capture abandoned mental asylums around America 
 

These images capture the crumbling asylums America's mental patients were once treated in.
Taken by New York-based photographer Christopher Payne, who spent six years travelling America to explore abandoned asylums, they are both beautiful and creepy in equal measure. 
Mr Payne photographed the empty hallways, scattered belongings and medical chambers of 70 different establishments across 30 states, including South Dakota, Tennessee and Illinois.
