Durham teaching assistants could go on strike after unions reject county council's new pay offer
 

Hundreds of teaching assistants could go on strike after two of the unions they belong to overwhelmingly rejected a controversial new pay deal from Durham County Council , while a third voted to accept.
The authority wants to pay them during term time rather than throughout the year, the arrangement until now.
But staff are fighting the proposals which would see them sacked and then re-hired on what they claim are inferior contracts which would result in a 23% pay cut for the majority of them.
