Clarke was left stunned after watching the United States win all four of the morning foursomes matches at Hazeltine.
Davis Love's superstars charged into commanding a 4-0 lead as Europe made their worst ever start to the competition.
But despite seeing stars, Clarke had little time to come to his senses before naming his pairings for the afternoon four-ball clashes.
  He was left with no choice but to drop long-time friend Westwood following his woeful performance against Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.
