Contactless card payments being introduced at Wallasey and Birkenhead tunnels



Motorists will be able to use contactless cards to pay for the Mersey tunnels from early next year.
A £3.1m scheme to improve the tolls system will also see “improved positioning” of coin baskets and the slot for rejected coins.
Merseytravel says that will make it easier to collect coins that are not accepted, speeding up journeys through the Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnels.
In future payments at staffed lanes will be also taken directly by tunnels staff, rather than cash being handed back to drivers to then be paid into the toll machine.
