Shaun Maloney couldn’t cheat Scotland. He couldn’t cheat his hometown club and he couldn’t cheat himself.
It’s the type of searing honesty which ended his playing career.
And it’s the type of values which prompted Brendan Rodgers to give Maloney a job with the Celtic youngsters within a week of his retirement.
At the age of 34, Maloney had the ability to keep going.
With 47 Scotland caps, he was on the verge of the Hall of Fame. With a contract sitting at Aberdeen during the last summer, he’d a chance to bookend his career at his local club.
