Brummie Awards: How Normandy landings hero Fred has made it onto the shortlist
 

A Normandy landings Second World War veteran, who recently received the Legion d’Honneur, has been shortlisted for a Brummies 2016 award .
Earlier this year, Fred King, 91, from Birmingham was given France’s highest honour for helping to liberate the country during the Second World War.
During the long, hard slog from the beaches of Normandy to Hamburg, he gave first aid and succour to injured soldiers of both sides.
And, although he is proud to be shortlisted for The Brummies, he shakes his head modestly, saying he just did his bit.
