Just outside the town, there is a Chinese cemetery designed by architect Edwin Lutyens, with an arched pagoda entrance.
Inside are the graves of over 800 Chinese workers, who died assisting the Allies in the Great War.
Britain’s Forgotten Army (Sunday Ch4) gave the impression the Chinese Labour Corps had been written out of history.
The presence of the cemetery suggests this isn’t true. It would be fairer to say the top brass did everything they could to ensure the sacrifice of these brave men was forgotten, and thankfully failed.
