Britain’s chief police officer announces his retirement
 

SIR Bernard Hogan-Howe, head of London’s Metropolitan police and Britain’s most senior officer, announced on September 29th that he would retire next year. The 58-year-old police boss had been expected to serve for at least another year.
He has been in charge of the capital’s coppers during a difficult time. Sir Bernard was appointed in September 2011, shortly after the worst riots in at least a generation struck London and other parts of the country, after which the police came under heavy criticism from politicians.
