The Dark Circle by Linda Grant (Virago, £16.99)
There is a breathless air to Linda Grant’s seventh novel, an elegant economy of character description that is entirely in keeping with her subject: the patients of a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Kent countryside at the end of the Second World War.
