The great journalist HL Mencken once wrote, “For every complicated problem there is a solution which is simple, direct, understandable, and wrong.” This might serve as an epigraph to Rory Stewart’s engaging, intelligent and ultimately moving account of three walks whereon he pondered the difference between Scotland and England.
