Bishop of Berwick title is revived in consecration at York Minster



After an absence of more than 400 years, a new Suffragan Bishop of Berwick has been formally appointed.
Rev Canon Mark Tanner takes a title created in 1537 by the first Bishop of Berwick, Rt Rev Thomas Sparke, but unoccupied since his death in 1572.
The resurrection of the title was proposed by Ry Rev Frank White when he retired as Assistant Bishop of Newcastle.
In practice, there will be little difference between the work of a Suffragan Bishop and a full-time Assistant Bishop, with Rev Canon Tanner sharing the work and ministry of the Bishop of Newcastle across the Diocese of Newcastle,... read more
