BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Born To Run (Sony) This belonged to a flatmate when I was a student in Cardiff. I played it to death. It was back when Springsteen was still writing poetry, before he did rock anthems with slogans. This has lovely stories and pictures on it, particularly Thunder Road. From the first mouth organ notes you know it’s special. 
TOM WAITS: Heartattack And Vine (Elektra) I love early Tom Waits. I saw him on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the late 1970s with just a piano, looking like a street bum.
