Bank of England staff stage first strike in 50 years after last-ditch talks failed to end salary dispute



The Bank of England has been hit by its first strike for 50 years after last-ditch talks failed to end a row over wages.
Security, catering and maintenance staff have walked out for three days over a ‘disgraceful’ 1 per cent pay rise awarded at managers’ discretion. 
The strike is embarrassing for the Bank, which is supposed to rein in inflation so that wage rises leave families with more money in their pockets. 
But instead, prices are rising at 2.6 per cent a year – far above the Old Lady’s 2 per cent target, and double the pay increase it has offered the low-paid workers.
