Autumn statement: Budget plans praised by business
 

Philip Hammond announced a new national productivity investment fund of £23billion to be spent on keeping Britain at the cutting edge of technological change and improving road, rail and communications networks.
The extra funding, which will include £2billion a year being pumped into research and development by 2021, is aimed at boosting the productivity of British workers, whose underperformance against other leading economies such as Germany was “shocking”, Hammond conceded.
