Australian plans for same-sex marriage referendum are blocked
 

Government plans for a national vote on legalising same-sex marriage in Australia have been blocked by opposition MPs.
Critics are now arguing that it would be better if the issue was decided in Parliament than be left to the public on February 11.
Pregnant women ‘may have to show their passports’ before giving birth Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, a marriage equality advocate, needs the full support of the centre-left Labour Party to hold a national vote on gay marriage.
