The fourth seed was dumped out the tournament at the third-round stage after suffering a five-set defeat at tjhe hands of Hyeon Chung.
Zverev, 20, led but crumbled to a 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-3 6-0 after suffering a fourth-set meltdown.
The German won just five points in the decider and defeat means he is still to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final - despite being ranked four in the world.
It means he has yet to ever challenge Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the big tournaments, with the big two winning all four Slams between them in 2017.
