Since it first went on sale in 1899 it is estimated to have been taken by 100billion people and is included in the World Health Organisation’s list of essential medicines needed in a basic health system. 
And it’s not hard to see why. 
The humble pill, which can cost as little as 2p per dose, has been credited with staving off cancer, reducing the risk of heart attack, lowering the chances of suffering a stroke and delaying the onset of dementia.
