In both western and eastern civilisation, lions are centuries-old symbols of majesty, power, authority and wisdom. So when in the 1920s Nottingham created the Council House as the new seat of city government, stone lions were chosen to flank the entrance, constant guardians of democracy.
That is the short answer to the latest question posed in our Ask the Post series: why are there lions outside the Council House? And, of course, they look more impressive than rats or trout.
