From the time they first met as students at Glasgow School of Art in 1940, Margot Sandeman and Joan Eardley were lifelong friends. Indeed Fiona Pearson, writing in the catalogue of the major retrospective held eight years ago, says Sandeman “was the mainstay in Eardley’s emotional life”. They frequently worked side by side. They also wrote to each other constantly and their letters are a primary source for Eardley’s life. But that says it all.
