The Scot required four match points to see off a resolute Raonic 11-9 in the final tie-break at the London O2.
Andy Murray looked ragged at the start and couldn't regain lost ground in the first set as Raonic delivered the opening blow, winning 7-5.
But Murray quickly rallied in the second and produced the sort of tennis that has got him to the coveted world No1 spot, winning it on a tie-break to remain in the clash.
Both men broke serve in the tie-break but Murray claimed the crucial advantage to stifle his opponent and force a deciding set.
