‘A killer in Manila’: President Duterte’s deadly crackdown on drugs
 

He was emphatic that he would fulfil his chilling promise to restore law and order by killing the country’s legions of drug dealers and addicts. An estimated 3.7 million Filipinos are in thrall to the drug methamphetamine, or “shabu” as it’s known locally.
Duterte, 71, gave police, soldiers and vigilantes an immediate licence to kill anyone they suspected of being involved in illegal drugs, quickly fuelling widespread bloodshed. 
The death toll from the first 100 days of his reign now stands at 3,700, with half of these extrajudicial killings taking place in the country’s capital, Manila.... read more
