500 million yen in compensation for Fukushima residents



THOUSANDS of Fukushima residents were awarded a total of 500 million yen (£3.4m) compensation yesterday by a Japanese court, which ruled that the state and energy company Tepco shared blame for the 2011 nuclear meltdown.
Fukushima District Court Judge Hideki Kanazawa said the government had failed to order Tepco to improve safety measures despite knowing as early as 2002 of a likelihood of a massive tsunami in the region.
