‘Diana, Princess of Wales has been seriously injured in a car crash in Paris. Her companion, Dodi Al Fayed, has been killed.’
This is how Sky News opened their report into the news of an accident just after midnight on August 31, 1997.
At first, it was not clear how seriously she was hurt, and she was said to have a concussion and a wound to her thigh.
Later, confirmation came from Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who was in the Middle East, that she had died.
She was 36, and her death left sons William and Harry without a mother.
