1986: When Leicester Ran The World



It's now 30 years since thousands of generous Leicestershire folk laced up their trainers and did their bit to help famine-stricken Africa.
As part of Sport Aid, at 3pm, on Sunday, May 25, 1986, almost 20 million sponsored runners 89 countries ran, jogged or walked 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to raise money for African famine relief charities.
In Leicestershire, organisers had hoped 3,000 county folk would participate – in the end, 25,000 big-hearted volunteers took part in the Race Against Time, running from Oadby racecourse to Leicester and back.
